Angel Bank – Episode 5

This episode was kind of annoying translate because of the demeanor of the job changer, as I think you’ll see. I don’t want to spoil too much of it, but I will say this, though. Japanese at the best of times is a vague language that relies on situational context for quite a lot of meaning. So even at times when people are trying their damnedest to be clear there’s always wiggle room for misunderstanding. So then if you have a character that is deliberately trying to be vague… I think you probably get the idea.

It’s still a good episode, though. Some of you that have worked at poorly-run companies before will find a lot of entertainment in Ms. Ino’s list of signs of bankruptcy. As someone who came out of such a situation recently I found myself messaging my translation of that list to people, and then having a hearty laugh.

As a more technical translation note, one of the things that made this episode difficult to translate was the explicit mention of the senpai(先輩)/kouhai(後輩) relationship in various scenes. I chose to eschew it completely because I believe the examples used within the show to demonstrate that relationship are fairly universal. The idea that such and such character is older or younger than another character is beside the point when the more universal concept of being indebted to one’s friends crosses that language boundary unscathed.

As always, thanks to Drazic for the timing, QC, packaging, friendship, and moral support. I definitely consider him my senpai.

Carranger 8-9 v3

There were some problems with the timing of ep 9 so here’s a v3. There’s also a v3 for ep 8 to fix the line with the random apostrophe. I figured that since i’m doing a new torrent anyway I might as well do a v3 for that as well.

Ep 7 is still the same so if you want to use that for seeding purposes just change the v2 in the folder name to v3 before starting the torrent. You can also change the name of ep 8 v2 to “[HaroRangers]Gekisou_Sentai_Carranger_-_08_v3[DVD][EC4280E7].mkv” before starting the torrent and you’ll have 99% or so of the file already. You can do the same for ep 9 v2 with “[HaroRangers]Gekisou_Sentai_Carranger_-_09_v3[DVD][C79ECC06].mkv” though that’ll only be about 1/3.

I’d do a patch if I knew how to but i’m too lazy to figure it out atm. If someone who has both files can do a patch that’d be great.

Carranger episode 7-9 v2

With even better encoding this time! We were using DVD5 ISOs before which were a huge improvement over the v1s that used avi rips but it’s always better to use DVD9s when possible. So I ended up buying the DVDs from ebay cause they were cheap enough (compared to what they’d cost new). Click here if you want to see what they look like for some reason.  I also bought another sentai on dvd that we might do after Carranger but I can’t seem to find the DVDs. They’re hiding or something.

Jikou Keisatsu 2 ep 6-9 softies

I have no idea why I didn’t do this ages ago. I guess I kinda forgot about it xD Anyway, here are the softsubs for Jikou Keisatsu season 2 ep 6-9. There’s no need to share ep 1-5 as we were using the translations from kazuya5661 anyway which you can find at d-addicts. The translations for 6-9 were done by SOS’s ce.ar however.

This isn’t our last release for Jikou Keisatsu however, we might go back to season 1 and do some DVD versions of that. I’d have to find ISOs or buy the DVDs first though.

Last Mail – Episode 1

This project’s been on the back burner for so long I can’t believe we’re actually releasing it. But here it is, episode 1 of Last Mail! A comedy about a girl getting text messages from the dead. Read more about the drama here. It’s pretty awesome. If you’ve found yourself attracted to a girl in a sheep costume then now is the time for you!

Angel Bank – Episode 4

Continuing in the tradition of previous episodes of Angel Bank, this episode tackles yet another kind job changer. One of the really interesting things about this show and about this episode, from my perspective, is the explanation of various pieces of Japanese culture. These explanations are quite remarkable for two reasons.

First, the concepts of honne(本音) and tatemae(建前) permeate Japanese culture in such a way that it can be difficult to get a real honest assessment of things. Tatemae, the politically correct official version of situations, is usually what you end up getting most often. So lots of Japanese people can talk to you at length about how the lifetime employment system means that loyalty is a two way street. If you’re loyal to your company then they’ll be loyal to you. Discussions of the negatives of such a system, the truth or the honne, are slightly harder to come by. They aren’t impossible to find, though, as is demonstrated by this episode of Angel Bank.

The second reason these explanations are remarkable is that the economics and mechanics of these situations are described in a fairly comprehensive fashion. Sometimes the explanations are even accompanied by animations to help make the point. This makes translation somewhat tough for me because I’m learning about new things along with you guys and Mamako. So when I do my first pass through an episode it sometimes takes me a little while before I fully understand what Mr. Ebisawa is getting at. I find myself in Ms. Ino’s shoes a lot asking myself, “What the hell did Ebisawa mean by that?”

This was most problematic in the first episode during Mr. Ebisawa’s conversation with that shadowy figure. It was just so difficult to understand what the point of that conversation was. It was slightly sinister, but yet Mr. Ebisawa is supposed to be a good guy. I can tell you it has gotten much easier for me as the series has progressed, and also as my own ability to understand has grown. Thank you all for being patient with me, and I assure you that the wait was worth it. Some of what I did during the hiatus was study my ass off to improve my Japanese, and it’s resulted in me being able to get through translations much much much faster. What used to take me days to do is now being accomplished in a few hours.

Many thanks also to Drazic who takes the gibberish I turn into him, and times/polishes into something palatable. He does a good job cracking the whip and getting a finished product out to people.

Angel Bank – Episode 3

And it’s episode 3 already! Which was a bit slowish again but hey, there’ss only 5 eps left anyway. Those will probably get released a lot faster though.

Ningen no Shoumei DVDs

A while ago I posted to ask if anyone owned Ningen no Shoumei DVDs and if they could rip them for us so we could make some DVD v2s for the series. Since nobody replied I decided to buy them myself and they arrived today! I dunno when we’ll start releasing these but  we’ll be doing v2s of Ningen no Shoumei with prettier encodes, typesetting and a better translation. Besides that I’m really just posting this to brag about how I bought the dvds. LOOK, I HAVE MONEY!  I’ll hope you all be very jealous and look forward to the Ningen no shoumei v2s.

Carranger – Episodes 4-6 V2

And here’s the second batch of Carranger v2s which includes episode 4-6. It took a bit longer than expected but that’s life or something. The next batch should be faster but who knows, maybe life will get in the way again. Also, the first person to make a “Dude, where’s my car?” joke when it took a while will get a cookie. DDL will be up when I’m done seeding the torrent.

Laser Beam

It’s been a while since we’ve done any PV releases and that’s because I wasn’t really sure what to do with it. We started doing PVs without karaoke and hardsubbed, and those kinda sucked. Then after a while we started doing karaoke. However, the earlier PVs without karaoke didn’t suck cause of the lack of karaoke, they just sucked cause of the horrid typesetting and encoding. So I decided that since we stopped doing karaoke we go back to the beginning, fix those things and we’d have some good PV subs! Perfume’s Laser Beam is the first PV that will be released like this.

You might notice that the tag on the file says “HaroSaigo”. That’s because this is a joint release with that lazy mexican bastard over at Saigoyume.com . (Not actually racism as he’s just living in Mexico and isn’t actually Mexican himself.) He finally ended up doing something and did the translation, timing and encoding for this PV. I did the typesetting so basically I did all the work anyway (Just joking of course for those of you who don’t get sarcasm).
