Angel Bank – Episode 8

1 year after we started and 1 year after the series premiered in Japan we finally wrap this thing up. We understand the wait must have been tough for you guys, but you have to trust us when we tell you it was worth it. Basically every moment the TL for this project wasn’t working on it he was studying to improve his Japanese skills, and in the past year that’s meant about a 10x improvement in translation speed.

This last episode of Angel Bank is pretty amazing. Kosuke Suzuki guest stars and shines as usual. The man is such a good actor whether he’s playing a kind of deranged villain character like Fukunaga in Liar Game or a rookie detective in a show like Keibuho Yabe Kenzo. We were really excited to see him pop up again in this show.

This episode is a little more plot heavy with regards to Mamako, but the Job Change of the Week is also very well done. They managed to end the series on one of the most important issues facing Japanese society in the modern day. I’m not sure it leaves very much open for a second go-round, but that’s okay. This show was really interesting with the 8 episodes it got, and it’s a very interesting depiction of Japanese culture.

Not very many Japanese shows are this self-aware about tackling some of the unfortunate problems that arise in Japanese society from time to time. It was nice to see a show like this that at times almost bordered on being a public service announcement, maintain an appropriate level of dramatic tension. It’s these kinds of interesting niche shows that inspire us to do what we do. We can definitely promise you that there’s more in the works after this.

The batch torrent will probably take a bit longer than usually as I want to change some minor things in the earlier eps. I’m still seeding ep 1-7 on my seedbox though so this shouldn’t matter too much. Just grab the singles instead of waiting for a batch.

Thanks to all the members of HaroRangers that made this possible through their TL’ing, QC’ing, Timing, Encoding, etc.

Angel Bank – Episode 7

It’s been a little bit since our last Angel Bank release. We had some computer technical difficulties as well as work ethic difficulties that prevented us from releasing this in a timely fashion. There is some good news, though. The finale(#8) has already been translated, and is now going through final timing and QC. We will finish this project close to a year after we began. It’s been a fun ride.

This penultimate episode is more character-focused than other episodes of the series, and has more to do with the basic impact of economics on people rather than high level economic theory. The theme is the value of a dollar and how it correlates with a person’s individual happiness. The guest stars turn in some very good performances, and there are more of them than usual.

I think this is one of the best episodes of the series. It’s structured really well, and you do end up feeling for the characters involved. I hope you guys enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed helping bring it to you.

Thanks to everyone involved with encoding, TL’ing, timing, QC’ing, and releasing.

Do as Infinity – Ariadne no Ito

And here’s our new year’s release. It’s not much but I haven’t really had a proper computer to do subbing on in the last few weeks. Although I finished timing this before my comp broke down, it still took a while before releasing because aaron_yume’s internet was too shitty to upload the encode (damn you Mexicans!). I decided to release it now instead of at 12 to make it seem like I have a life.

Anyway, not many releases lately, but that’s partly because of my comp dying on me. You can blame the rest on various other people.  Car might actually be faster this year (I might’ve said this last year as well? lol) and we’ll definitely finish Angel bank and do some other drama projects.

I’d also like to thank everyone involved with the Hurri project, we wouldn’t have gotten the “Worst fansub shit of the year 2011″ award without your help.  Oh, and I’d like to thank my cats.

Anyway, Happy new year!

PS: This is also the fourth anniversary release. Hopefully we can do an actual anniversary release for the fifth one.

Hurricanger episode 1

So what is this? The third time or something this episode got subbed? We’re not the kind of group to start from ep 2 though so here’s Hurricanger ep 1 again but now with our subs. Free internet cookie for everyone who complaints with arguments besides “But that’s how group X did it!” or you can just not complain. Either way is fine.

For those of you wondering how this will affect Carranger, it won’t. The original plan was to do this show after Carranger was done but HeatMetal from Over-Time showed interest in helping us sub the show making it quite silly to delay the release of this till Carranger is done since they won’t affect each other at all. So is Carranger slow? Yes. Will Hurri make it even slower? Nope. Will Hurri be faster than Carranger? Probably. We’ll also try to make Carranger releases faster though. It’d be kind of embarrassing for us if Hurri ended up catching up to Carranger after all (Not that it won’t happen).

A bad time for new groups?

Ever since’s SARS’ pathetic ”fight against streaming” and Stormy trying to make sure the least amount of people possible watch their subs (among others) I’ve noticed that somehow people have become afraid to say things that might potentially offend fansubbers in the drama fandom.  At the same time I’m seeing a lot more groups trying to force their fans into worshipping their subs and even trying to force people to comment and say “Thank you”. Anything that isn’t completely positive and lacking of opinion will be seen as bash the group. This creates quite an awkward situation where comments are worthless because they’ll all just be “Thank you!” with no actual feedback at all. Obviously it’s nice to be thanked for your hard work but once you try and force it out of people who knows if it’s sincere?  This is a bad situation for most groups but I think it’s especially bad for new groups.

This is because no matter how bad or good a release is they’ll get the same comments and especially a newer group can learn a lot from criticism even if it might not seem like what you want to hear at first.  Unlike older groups they don’t have things set in stone yet so during this time a groups comments/feedback is very important. Starting out as a group that forces comments to be nice and thankful will make sure you’ll never improve.

That being said I do kind of understand the people that try to trick people into commenting as a lack of feedback can be really discouraging after you’ve done a lot of work on a sub. However, just tons of “Thank you” aren’t feedback. So if you ever decide to comment on one of our subs try to say a bit more than just that. It can even be about the show itself and not have anything to do with the subs.

Angel Bank – Episode 6

This episode will always occupy a special place in my heart. You see, it guest stars Ms. Maju Ozawa. I was first taken with Ms. Ozawa when she guest starred in the two part season finale of the other excellent series, Keibuho Yabe Kenzo as the woman guilty of shaking down old people for their pension checks. Here’s a picture to jog your memory:

Some of you may also know her from her somewhat creepy digital performance in Yakuza 4(龍が如く4) as Lili. While she tends to be tied down by quite a few more clothes in this episode she still manages to do a great job. Because I think there are far too many pictures of her looking sexy on the internet I thought I’d counter balance it with my own screen cap from this episode.

What is she doing indeed! Countless thanks to Drazic for the timing, QC, packaging release, and whatever the hell else he does.

Ayumi Hamasaki – Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~

So I hadn’t even heard this song before I decided to see how badly Renai fansubs must’ve shat all over it. And boy did they fuck that up (Unless you have  some kind of weird fetish for bad encoding and karaoke: example). So because I kinda started liking the song I decided to sub it properly. Found myself a vob at jpopsuki (Renai used the tv-rip, god knows why) and noticed that Kiwi-musume had a translation of the lyrics up (translated by Megchan though!).

Ningen no Shoumei DVD v2 ep 1

So while we finished Ningen no Shoumei a while ago I thought the end result could be better. It was one of the series we still finished hardsubbed mainly for the sake of consistency but now we only do softsubs so Ningen is starting to look out of place.  Also, hardsubs suck so it was kinda lame to have one of our series hardsub only.

And while the subs weren’t horrible it wouldn’t hurt to give them another editing pass, fix some of the timing and do proper typesetting. So I bought the DVDs and this is the first re-release of Ningen no Shoumei using the DVD source. It has a way prettier looking encode from the DVDs and improved subs thanks to Kazetrigger taking another look at them and Lynxara doing a editing pass.

For those of you who’ve seen the series already the DVDs do include extra scenes as well so if you really liked the series it’s worth a rewatch just for that and the better video quality/subs.

Angel Bank – Episode 5

This episode was kind of annoying translate because of the demeanor of the job changer, as I think you’ll see. I don’t want to spoil too much of it, but I will say this, though. Japanese at the best of times is a vague language that relies on situational context for quite a lot of meaning. So even at times when people are trying their damnedest to be clear there’s always wiggle room for misunderstanding. So then if you have a character that is deliberately trying to be vague… I think you probably get the idea.

It’s still a good episode, though. Some of you that have worked at poorly-run companies before will find a lot of entertainment in Ms. Ino’s list of signs of bankruptcy. As someone who came out of such a situation recently I found myself messaging my translation of that list to people, and then having a hearty laugh.

As a more technical translation note, one of the things that made this episode difficult to translate was the explicit mention of the senpai(先輩)/kouhai(後輩) relationship in various scenes. I chose to eschew it completely because I believe the examples used within the show to demonstrate that relationship are fairly universal. The idea that such and such character is older or younger than another character is beside the point when the more universal concept of being indebted to one’s friends crosses that language boundary unscathed.

Torrent - DDLSoftsubs

As always, thanks to Drazic for the timing, QC, packaging, friendship, and moral support. I definitely consider him my senpai.
